TASIK KENYIR, TERANGGANU

Located approximately 55 km from Kuaia Terengganu, the Kenyir Lake is reputed to be one of the largest and most fascinating man-made lake in the world. Covering an area of 369 sq km, it is also Malaysia's largest rock-filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was inundated by water, most of the hills were above the water level, thus creating about 340 man-made islands. Surrounded by a lush tropical jungle, the Kenyir Lake is a popular and ideal retreat for nature lovers, anglers, photo enthusiasts and fun seekers.


Some of the activities which could be carried out here are fishing, swimming, canoeing, boating and jungle trekking. Due to the cleanliness of the lake and abundance of food supply, the Kenyir Lake has a wide variety of fresh water fish such as Baung, Toman, Kelisa and Lampam. Accommodation such as houseboats, floating chalets and lakeside resorts are also available to visitors.

TASIK BERA, PAHANG.

Located in southwest Pahang, Tasik Bera is the largest natural freshwater lake in Peninsula Malaysia. It is situated in the saddle of the main and eastern mountain ranges of the Peninsula and is approximately 35km long and 20km wide. Tasik Bera has remained a unique and remote wetland wilderness, which is surrounded by a patchwork of dry lowland forests.
Like Tasik Chini, the second largest natural lake in the Peninsula, an aboriginal tribe also inhabits Bera. The Semelai aborigines reside in the areas surrounding Tasik Bera and they continue to acquire food in traditional ways. Rich in wildlife and vegetation, Bera is therefore an ecosystem, which not only supports a diversity of animal and plant life but also sustains the livelihood of the Semelai people.
Tasik Bera plays an important role in flood control, water flow regulation and purification and it also provides many natural resources for the local community. Hence, it is protected under an international treaty, RAMSAR CONVENTION, which was declared in November 1994. The Pahang State Government has also undertaken plans to formulate a nature based tourism development plan, which includes the establishment of a visitor or field study center, the training of site personnel, and the integration of the local community into the overall development.
Bera Lake is a sanctuary for 328 species of flora, 200 bird species, 50 mammals, and more than 95 species of fishes. Although very difficult to discover, the extended wetland area and its surrounding forests still support tigers, tapirs, elephants, and other endangered species. The clouded leopard, wild boars, monkeys, flying squirrels, and flying lemurs are other wildlife known to exist in Bera. The lake also contains a large number of the country's freshwater fish species, including both popular aquarium and sport fishes.
For nature enthusiasts, Bera is an ideal place for many recreational and adventurous activities. Visitors can choose to jungle trek, participate in river safaris, or go fishing, especially after heavy rains. The relatively isolated and tranquil surroundings of the open water are also perfect for boating or kayaking. Visitors can cruise river channels and inlets in search of vegetation and wildlife.
There are distinct wet and dry seasons in Tasik Bera. The wet months are from April to May and September to January. On the other hand, dry periods are from February to April and June to August.
To ensure safety, visitors are encouraged to hire a guide for all activities on the lake and surrounding forests. The Semelai's knowledge of both the forest and lake's habitats make them a popular choice as guides.
There is only one resort in Tasik Bera but visitors are permitted to camp on the north end of the lake at Sudin's Jetty, as well as the grounds near the resort. Bera is accessible by road. Alternatively, visitors can also take the train from both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which stops at Triang and Mentakab respectively. From there, taxis are available to the Bera jetty. There are no local car rental facilities; they must therefore be hired in Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan.

GUA KELAM, KAKI BUKIT, PERLIS.

Salah satu dari gua yang paling menarik di Malaysia ialah gua yang berukuran 370-meter panjang berhampiran pekan kecil Kaki Bukit yang dinamakan Gua Kelam.
Gua Kelam terletak kira-kira 33km ke utara Kangar iaitu ibu negeri Perlis dan sangat popular kerana laluan guanya yang sangat menarik di mana pelawat boleh memasuki gua ini melalui pintu utama dan keluar di tempat yang lain.
Satu-satunya jalan untuk ke gua ini ialah melalui sebatang jambatan kayu yang tergantung. Jambatan ini menghubungkan Kaki Bukit dengan Lembah Wan Tangga iaitu sebuah lembah di hujung Gua Kelam.
Pada tahun 1935, seorang warga Inggeris menyedari bahawa laluan sungai di sini adalah cara yang baik untuk mengangkut bijih timah dari sebuah lombong berhampiran sungai ini menerusi gua bawah tanah ke Kaki Bukit. Kini pelawat tempatan dan asing boleh berjalan menerusi gua ini menggunakan sebuah laluan kayu yang diterangi cahaya lampu.
Anda masih boleh melihat peninggalan operasi melombong di sini. Sambil anda berjalan di dalam gua ini, bunyi air dari anak sungai yang mengalir di bawah tanah berserta bunyi decitan kelawar dan titisan air dari bongkahan stalaktit bergabung membentuk bunyi semulajadi yang unik.
Bunyi yang agak menyeramkan ini meningkatkan lagi suasana misteri yang terdapat di gua ini yang dahulunya pernah digunakan oleh penduduk zaman purba sebagai tempat tinggal.

TASIK PEDU, KUALA NERANG, KEDAH

Pedu Lake is Kedah's newest tourist attraction. Among the recreational activities available here include fishing, water-skiing, swimming and picnicking.

It is a retreat of lush jungle surroundings, home to a wide spectrum of flora and fauna as well as a great place for nature lovers. Here, one will be able to see how wild bees gather honey.

Among the facilities provided are parking, restrooms, rest huts, picnic spots and a suspension bridge. Also, there is a jetty for tourists and fishermen who want to go out to the lake

Lata Mengkuang

Lata Mengkuang is located 11 km from Sik town or 95 km from Alor Setar. Situated nearby to this recreational area is an attractive 20 m waterfall.

There is a wide variety of flora and fauna of lowland dipterocarp forest. A 5 km track that leads to Lata Lembu Recreational Forest which was once used for logs transportation.

There is rock cliff ideal for those who enjoy challenging activities and absailing.
The main recreational activities in this area are family picnics, swimming and summer camps.

This recreational forest is also suitable for educational and research purposes.
The main plants species found here are meranti melantai, meranti langgong, meranti tembaga and palms.

Titi Hayun

This recreational forest got its name from the suspension bridge that is situated nearby. It is strategically located at the starting point of the steps to the peak of Gunung Jerai which is known as Tangga Kenari Seribu Tahun. An interesting one kilometer hike through natural forest (jungle track) leads to the Puteri Mandi waterfalls. Along the journey to this recreational area, visitors would have the opportunity to observe fruit orchards, rubber estates and traditional Malay villages. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna of lowland dipterocarp forest . Meranti melantai, meranti langgong and meranti tembaga are timber species commonly found here.

Junjung

If you feel a bit adventurous, you can head on over to the Junjung waterfall which is a bit further from the town area. Over there, you can cool down by the pool or even have a family picnic. Its open to the public daily, but do beware of some slippery spots if you plan to climb up the waterfalls.
Getting there is easy. From Kulim town, ask for directions to the new police station building. You will see a traffic light right in front of the building. From there, turn in left (assuming the police station on your right) and follow the road all the way until you reach Junjung town, which is a small town. You can see signboards to the waterfalls from there. Ask the locals for more information if you are not sure

Batu Hampar

You can get to Batu Hampar quite easily from Yan. It is located just 3km from Yan, and 40km from Alor Star. Near this recreational forest is the Royal Cottage of the Sultan of Kedah.

Amongst the special natural features of the area are a waterfall and the Raga River that flows through the forest.

There is also a homestay village called Kampung Sungai Raja found near Batu Hampar. This recreational area has a large variety of flora and fauna and is a great spot for outdoor fun.

Balai Besar

Located towards the back of the Kota Setar Palace complex is the Balai Besar. Its initial purpose was as a Balai Rong Seri or Balai Penghadapan (audience hall). Built in 1735 by the 19th Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Muazzam Shah, this was a lovely building with wood pillars, roofs and flooring.

Unfortunately, the building was badly damaged in 1770 when the Bugis armada attacked the place, and ruined even further by the Siamese in 1821.

It was, however, refurbished in 1896 to prepare for the weddings of the reigning Sultan's children. Besides weddings, the Balai Besar was also used for official ceremonies and other royal events.

Air Terjun Puncak Janing

Air Terjun Puncak Janing in Padang Terap, 25 km from Alor Setar. Situated in the Janing Peak, is the ideal picnic area with its waterfall direct from the mountain.

The 1.5 km stretch of Sungai Janing and its unique landscape of rocks provide an ideal place for swimming, picnics and recreation. A wide variety of flora and fauna that encompassed lowland dipterocarp forest could be found here. There is a 3 km track that surrounds this recreational area and also a 15 km track that leads to Bukit Wang Recreational Forest.
